Self-help only gets you so far. Here’s what came next for me…

At some point "Believe in yourself" became bad advice on my way to becoming a full-time #copywriter.

Part 1 of 3 of a series on LinkedIn. Want to connect with me there?

📖 Storytime...

The switch had flipped from needing confidence to having confidence. I wanted to move to the next step...whatever that was. But I had no idea what the next step was. And I was on a full-fledged hunt, looking for REAL help, REAL tips...Something I could use to finally break into the industry or get a client.

But everywhere I turned, they were pitching mindset shifts and personal development as the best way to achieve your dreams.

Meanwhile, I couldn't find any resources that were designed for my situation:

👉 an industry outsider

👉 seeking a role in an agency or in-house copywriting

👉 with no portfolio

👉 very little experience

Don't get me wrong. I think there's a place for personal development and mindset shifts. 🙋‍♀️ I'll admit: podcasts and influencers made me believe in myself. But it isn't the whole freaking roadmap. There comes a moment when you need actionable advice. And that's where I was.

So, where were the field guides? The step-by-steps? The checklists?

I couldn't find them. I DID find a lot of adjacent workshops or courses. And I wracked 'em up...At a guess, I've invested to date somewhere in the $8k-$10k

range. But none of that got me a job in copywriting.

💁‍♀️ Tip...

Switch the content you're consuming.

Instead of the creators focused on a topic that no longer served me, I started seeking out copywriters (I know. Major!)

I started seeking advice from people who were doing exactly what I wanted to be doing. I unsubscribed or muted the old content. I subscribed to new channels, bought new books, that kind of thing.

💨⚡️❤️‍🔥 All of a sudden, my motivation came back. I was inspired all over again. I felt encouraged by this new community of like-minded peeps. And I started getting WAY better advice.

🤓 You an action taker? I thought so... If you were going to make a switch in your content and want to know where to even start with allll that, here are a few Qs to ask yourself...

1️⃣ What channels or creators make you feel guilty or bad? (Maybe it's time to mute or unsubscribe?)

2️⃣ Would you be happy or fulfilled if your career path led you to where this creator is right now?

3️⃣ Do their values sync up with yours? (For example, if you listen to someone who celebrates "the grind" but YOU value peace and downtime, maybe you're not a match for that content.)

Are you gonna be unsubscribing from SOME kind of content this week? (No need to say what/who you're unsub'ing from. What's not right for you could be someone else's go-to and we want to be supportive and respectful!) 🥰
